Like the nations surrounding them, the Israelites really wanted a king. But when their rejection of God as the real king was exposed, they were terrified and realized their sin in asking for a king. Now that Saul was their king, there could be no turning back from their mistake. Samuel could not change their mess. He promised that he would not sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for them and that he would keep teaching them God’s way.
